The beautiful River Don near Vertiachi and Peskovata.
This is a totally rural area. The river here is great for

swimming and the fishing is excellent.

Defensive positions on the east side of the Don near
Vertiachi. These were Soviet defenses in July 1942.
The Germans probably defended the same positions
after they were encircled in November 1942.

One of many monuments at Mamayev Hill. Here and
also in St. Petersburg there are sculptures of civilians
sending children off to war and mourning the dead.

We found a lot of relics here.Very hard work.

A small piece of fine china dug up in the middle of
an agricultural field that used to be Pitomnik village.

Soviet section of cemetary at Rossoschka. Some
Soviet soldiers were being buried. A youth group
was helping with the burial of newly discovered
remains.

The belt buckle is a very rare find on the battlefield as
it was used by Soviet cadets only during the war.
After the war it was used by all Soviet soldiers
